Jean Édouard Vuillard, born November 12, 1868 in Cuiseaux and died in La Baule June 21, 1940, is a painter, draftsman, engraver and illustrator French. He is one of the founding members of the Nabi movement. For them, a painting is first “a flat surface covered with colors in a certain order assembled” as Denis will later formulate. In this search for plastic autonomy of the work, they paint in large areas of color, shade and light, which assemble like the pieces of a puzzle. Painted around 1890, Édouard Vuillard’s self-portrait reproduced on the stamp is fully in keeping with this radical aesthetic.
