In 1848, the Administration of Finance, under the direction of Etienne Arago, chose the representation of the Republic for the first postage stamp. The project of Jacques-Jean Barre, engraver general of the Coins of France, is accepted. The subject chosen is the profile of Ceres, goddess of the harvest, agricultural allegory and symbol of freedom.

The block reissue of 20 stamps takes the Ceres green letterless non-perforated in typography to commemorate the 170 years of the first French postage stamp, with a head-tail sole face of Ceres.
